Ask any contractor in Waterloo Region when their phone rings most and they will tell you: early autumn. People come back from summer, look at the kitchen they have been tolerating, and want it fixed before the holidays. Everyone has the same idea at the same time, so the trades fill up and the schedule stretches.
The data agrees. We pulled twelve months of Google search volumes for renovation searches made from Kitchener (Google Ads data via DataForSEO, September 2025 to August 2026, pulled 11 and 12 October 2026). Google rounds these figures into buckets, so read the shape rather than the exact numbers. The same calendar appears on our homepage under when to start.

Three things stand out. September 2025 was a spike across every renovation search, roughly ten times a typical month for kitchens. January showed a smaller bump: the new-year planners. And bathrooms were steadier than kitchens all year, with a second peak in June, perhaps because a bathroom is a shorter project people try to fit in before the summer.
Why the spike matters to you
When demand arrives all at once, three things happen. Contractors’ calendars fill, so the gap between signing and starting grows. Suppliers and fabricators get busier, so lead times on countertops and special-order items stretch. And everyone wants to finish before the same deadline (usually the holidays), which is the least forgiving time to be waiting on a missing part.
None of this is a reason to wait for a perfect month. It is a reason to separate the decisions from the construction. The decisions (layout, cabinets, countertop, tile, appliances) take thinking time. The construction takes calendar time. Doing the first in a quiet month means the second can happen when you want it.
A season-by-season plan
Winter: design and decide. The quietest period for searches is the best time for a measure, drawings and a written quote. You have time to look at samples in your own kitchen’s winter light, change your mind, and sign without pressure. Winter measures also show the room at its darkest, which is the right moment to plan the lighting.
Spring: build. With a signed design, the cabinets can be built in the workshop while you finish choosing tile and fixtures. Installation can land in late spring, before summer holidays scatter homeowners and trades alike.
Summer: the easy window. July had the fewest kitchen searches of the year. If your plans are already made, summer can be a calm time to have the work done, and you can cook on the barbecue while the kitchen is out of action.
Autumn: book early or plan for winter. If you want a new kitchen before the holidays, the drawings need to be finished well before September. If you start thinking about it in October, plan to design over the winter and install in spring.
Permits and timing
Most kitchen renovations need no building permit at all: new cabinets, countertops, backsplash and flooring do not. A permit is needed when plumbing fixtures are added, removed or moved, when drainage or a load-bearing wall changes, or when a basement is finished. If yours needs one, the City’s review time is part of the schedule, so it is worth knowing early. Our guide to building permits for kitchens and bathrooms explains which jobs need one in Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge.
What the numbers cannot tell you
Search volume is a proxy for demand, not a booking calendar. These figures cover one year, and one year can include a one-off: a September spike may be a pattern or an unusually busy autumn. Google rounds monthly volumes into broad buckets, so 70 and 90 are closer than they look. And searches show when people start looking, not when they sign: most homeowners research for weeks before they call anyone. Interest rates, house sales and the weather move renovation plans too. Treat the table as the shape of the year, and use it the way we do: as a reason to start the thinking early, not as a forecast of any single month.
Working backwards from a date
If you have a date in mind (a family event, a sale, a baby), count backwards:
- The finished date. Leave a margin for final adjustments.
- Installation. The shortest stage, but it depends on everything before it.
- The workshop build. Custom cabinets are made to order after the drawings are signed.
- The permit, if needed. Only for plumbing, structural or basement work.
- Drawings and quote. Allow time to review and change your mind.
- The first conversation and the measure. This is the step you can take today.

Questions
What is the busiest month for kitchen renovations in Kitchener?
In the twelve months to August 2026, Google searches for kitchen renovation from Kitchener peaked in September 2025 at about 720, against roughly 70 in a typical month. Bathroom and basement searches spiked the same month.
Is winter a bad time to renovate a kitchen?
Not for the work itself, which happens indoors. Winter is an excellent time to design and sign, and in many years an easier time to get on a schedule. Plan for snow on delivery days and keep the heat on in the room.
How far ahead should I start planning a kitchen renovation?
Work backwards from the date you want it finished: installation, then the workshop build of the cabinets, then any permit, then the drawings and quote, then the measure. Starting the conversation a few months before the season you want is sensible.
